We have sharepoint installed within school and I'm not sure which version I should install. MLG was updated in July07 and SLK was updated in Jan08, which makes me think I should install SLK, but it doesn't appear to have classes, parents, planners, etc...
Could someone offer some advice on which of these to use?

Thanks

Hi,

MLG is a framework designed to provide the basis for your entire portal/VLE. SLK is an e-learning application which can be plugged into any SharePoint based portal to allow e-learning. MLG comes with an older version of SLK which is the default e-learning application within MLG, but can be replaced by any other SharePoint based one.

Unless, you already have a SharePoint portal set up, customised and used, I would personally suggest initially going down the MLG route. Your users will get more functionality upfront which should help drive the use of your portal. The SLK version which comes with MLG is perfectly usable - although missing a few features and bug fixes from the latest version. Getting your users (teachers and pupils) to use any e-Learning application will always take longer as it's a sea change in how they work. The MLG will give them something useful to work with immediately while you work on getting buy in for e-learning.

There's work on at the moment to merge the SLK with MLG and the latest version, but I'm not sure when that will be released.

There's some more general information available from http://www.learninggateway.net.
