All, is there any reason that when I go to http://<servername>, I end up at <servername>/personal/<username>/default.aspx
I know this is probably a SharePoint configuration problem, but any help would be very much appreciated.

Also...when trying to add users as a student or teacher, I get the following error:

The user or users have been added successfully, but there was an error in sending the e-mail message. The server may not be set up correctly to send e-mail. To verify that e-mail is configured correctly, contact your server administrator.

I am going from http://<servername>/personal/<username>/default.aspx -> Site Actions -> Site Settings -> People and Groups -> New -> Entering the info

To fix the email error check that your outgoing smtp servers settings are correct. In SharePoint Central Admin go to Central Administration > Operations > Outgoing E-Mail Settings.

As for the other problem, my guess is that you've configured the my sites to work on http://servername, when really it should have been assigned to a different hostname or port.
