SLK 1.7: How do I turn on email notifications?

Maybe I am completely missing where a setting is located (or maybe I don't have the access in SharePoint, as I am a trainer not a SharePoint admin), but I got very excited when I saw a message about "email notification".

Where can I turn this on? (If I can't, what do I ask the SharePoint admin to do?)

Does it notify a student when there is a new course assigned to them?

Does it notify them when a course is overdue?

There is a checkbox when creating emails to turn them on. This assumes that SharePoint itself is already configured to send emails - for alerts etc.

It will notify students/instructors when there is a change of status for an assignment e.g. new assignment.

There is a sample project which will send reminders.

Thanks Richard - it sounds as if I need to talk to the SharePoint Admin, as I cannot even see anything to create an email. I am sure email notifications 'is' turned on somewhere as I get them for another module within this SharePoint instance.
