I've received a copy of mails about this error when installing SharePoint 2007 and if you have this problem you'll need to add the following to your registry entries:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\12.0\ServerLanguage
"1033"=""

You could also put the following into a fix.reg file using notepad:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\12.0\ServerLanguage
"1033"=""

Thanks Nelius. Is this a temporary fix you need to do to get SharePoint running on a non-US system? If so, I'll add it to the GettingStarted.doc for next CTP.

This appears to be a SharePoint beta issue and should be resolved in the release product.

The recommended procedure for resolving this issue (corrupt registry settings) is a clean re-install.
